Roman Pax AE 4 of HELENA

This piece was minted at Trier in the name of Helena, who was the wife of Constantius and mother of Constantine the Great. She became a Christian in 313 AD, and according to tradition found the relic of the True Cross in Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulchre. She is thought to have died in 328, and was later made a saint of the Christian church. The obverse of this piece depicts the diademed and draped bust of Helena facing right, with legends FL.IVL.HELENAE.AVG. The reverse depicts Pax standing left, holding branch and sceptre. The legends read PAX.PVBLICA. The mintmark TRP appears in the exergue. This piece is struck on a smallish flan, but otherwise grades EF, with sharp devices and legends where struck up, and a nice portrait. A very attractive example of one of the few Roman coins to depict a saint!
